Wicca

A religion both old and new…

What is Wicca?

Wicca is an initiatory pagan religion in which at least one Goddess and one God are revered, and harmony with nature is emphasized. Religious rituals usually center around cycles of the moon, sun, and animal and plant life. The word “Wicca,” (which was usually spelled “Wica” when first introduced) is derived from words meaning, “wise one,” “witch,” or perhaps “bend or twist,” and was introduced into modern English by Gerald B. Gardner; his work and that of his immediate students provide the basis of common practice and belief.

Where did Wicca come from?

We really don’t know. Gerald B. Gardner, a retired British civil servant with a wide range of interests who is generally recognized as the father of Wicca, claimed to have been initiated into a religious group with ancient roots. Wiccans look to his work and that of other tradition founders, and to archaeology and folklore as well as personal inspiration for practice and theology.

What do Wiccans do?

Wiccans perform rituals according to lunar and seasonal cycles involving prayer, chanting, singing and making music, divination and acts of magic (variously defined), and sharing of food and drink. Acts of blessing, consecration, empowerment and healing may take a central position. Ritual drama, games and laughter are often part of communal worship.
